Un colosal cataclismo tectónico hundió la Cordillera de Los Andes en el mar configurando una geografía totalmente desmembrada en la que se amontonan archipiélagos, fiordos y canales desde el Seno de Reloncaví hasta la Tierra del Fuego. Hacia el oriente, la Patagonia chilena comprende además los bordes de las estepas argentinas y al sur, la mayor parte de la Tierra del Fuego y sus archipiélagos, hasta el Cabo de Hornos.

El Desierto de Atacama es el desierto habitado más árido de la Tierra, de 105.000 km2, que se extiende en el norte de Chile abarcando 14 grados de latitud con un ancho máximo de 180 km entre la Cordillera de Los Andes y el Océano Pacífico. Una parte de él es la Puna de Atacama o Altiplano a los 3500 msnm. compartido con Bolivia y Argentina.

Desde el Lago Titicaca al sur la Cordillera de los Andes se separa en dos dejando entre ellas una elevada meseta de origen terciario cuya altitud promedio es de 4.000 msnm., un extensísimo altiplano de por lo menos 10° de latitud que es compartido por cuatro países: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile y Perú.

En el borde oriental del gran altiplano de Bolivia, al sureste del Lago Titicaca, se alza majestuosa la Cordillera Real que algunos llamaron “el Himalaya del Nuevo Mundo” pues indudablemente hace honor a su nombre de Real.
